After One Month of Sucking Green Smoothies

If you’ve been following along in my blog here, I found Green for Life in July and decided to drink a green smoothie a day for a month to see what happens. The only thing I can tell so far is that my skin has improved greatly — no more overly dry skin. I think my digestion has improved, but I’ll need to test it. I have a doctor’s appointment in a few weeks so I’ll check to see how it improved my blood sugar (I’m ‘pre-diabetic’) and cholesterol levels (should be taking statins) — and hopefully my next MRI results. The only bad thing that has happened was all my test subject — ok, two family members — whom I tested my green smoothies on would not drink them.

I’m not sure why my two lab rats volunteers didn’t like them, and there was nothing I could do to get them to drink the green smoothie I had made. (Think Dr. Seuss’ ‘Green Smooties and Ham’ — except without the Ham) There was a sort of whole body reaction to seeing, sniffing them — like when you touch an electric fence. You’re curious — but then… you got too close: ZAP!

After more than three months eating vegan, I guess my tongue’s taste buds really have changed.  It’s made it a little difficult eating out — like absolutely no fast food.  I simply refuse to eat at any fast food chains ‘cuz the food is known to be toxic (see “Food, Inc”, “Supersize Me”, “King Corn”, etc.)  In any case, if I have to choose between fast food and no food, I’ll opt for a hand full of almonds from the gas station store.

I guess green smothies will turn you into a mutant militant plant-love’n crazy who won’t eat at “In & Out”.  So if this sounds like something you want to get involved in here’s my current green smoothie recipe.  Oh, I forgot to say they really are good for you.  Here’s the recipe:

In a blender combine in this order:

  • coconut milk (or any milk like rice milk, hemp milk, almond milk — just not cow milk)
  • half a bunch of kale
  • half a head of red leaf lettuce
  • half a head of romaine lettuce
  • a handful of watercress
  • Vega Complete Whole Food Health Optimizer (1 scoop)
  • frozen banana
  • frozen berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, etc)
  • dates and agave nectar to sweeten to taste

Advice for Cancer Scare

Over a few weeks you notice a bump on your forearm that seems to be growing rapidly and not going away .  You go to the doctor to have it looked at and they perform some minor surgery to remove the cyst.  A few days later the cyst comes back positive for cancer but no cancer cells at the margins so the doctor reports that ‘they got it all’.

This happened just last month to a friend of mine, and while for the moment we’re relieved that ‘they got it all’ — I’m more concerned with what state his body is in that brought him to a point where cancer was allowed to grow so aggressively.  So I talked with his partner and asked about their eating and exercise habits.  It sounded like the better-than-average ‘meat-centered’ American diet, except something was severely lacking: greens.

Their diet consisted of meat and cheese most meals and deep-fried something only once a week — but no fast food.  That was a relief — fast food kills.  Of course I recommend a vegan diet — it’s been shown to reverse heart disease in a few years and resolve diabetes type 2 in 30 days — but I knew that was too extreme of a change.  So in case you or someone you love finds themselves in a similar situation, here’s the advice I gave:

  1. Instead of using artificial sweeteners which are known to cause cancer, use zero Calorie natural sweeteners made with leaves from the stevia plant or low GI sweeteners like Agave Nectar.
  2. Take 1 2 tablespoon of fresh organic flax seed oil every day, one at lunch and one at dinner, and avoid deep-fried foods. When you buy organic flax seed oil, make sure it’s refrigerated and the oil has not expired.  Pills are not the best choice – you don’t know how fresh it is.  Fish oil doesn’t count since it contains mostly derivatives of you get in fresh flax oil, and your body can create those derivatives on it’s own anyway.  (Read the rest of this blog to understand why avoiding deep-fried foods is extremely important in creating a healthy Omega 6:3 ratio that fights inflammation in the body.)
  3. Eat the biggest organic salad you can possibly imagine, daily or every other day. Avoid iceberg lettuce and go for romaine, red-leaf lettuce, arugula, or any other or any combination of lettuces.  Avoid cheese and milk-based dressings as these may counteract the nutrition you’re seeking to obtain.  Use balsamic vinegar dressings or fruit-juice based dressings as these are much better for you.  Be creative, throw on top an heirloom tomato or walnuts and beets.  Use your imagination but have at least one big salad per day.
  4. Include a green smoothie once a day. (Once you’re doing 1-3, a green smoothie a day will really change your life.  See my post on green smoothies.)

Update 8/26 – Looking back at this advice, I missed one huge thing that makes all the difference: “low to no meat and dairy”.  (The only safe levels of meat and dairy is about 5-10% of your total calories. [see The China Study])  Maybe it is because this suggestion is just too extreme, but it is key.  Eating a lot more green leafy vegetables is key too, since there’s a ton of phytonutrients in them that your body needs.  If someone told me a year ago to go vegan and see what happens to your MRIs, my first thought would have been “that’s crazy”.  Now this is the advice I’m passing on.  Give your body a break from meat and dairy for a few months to a year and just see how your health improves — and don’t forget the green smoothies.
