Anti-cancer Eating

Last updated 10/11/10 – Updated information on: 1) selecting Chia Seeds over Flax Oil for source of Omega 3; 2) the  importance of including a healthy source of saturated fats for vegans; and, 3) stronger language on avoiding soy.

1. Follow a whole-food, plant-centered vegan diet

  • IMPORTANT: no meat or dairy products, turn cancer off by keeping the total calories from meat and dairy in your diet below 10-5%; over 20% of total calories from meat or dairy fuels cancer [4]
  • get your full RDA of potassium, 4.7 grams[1], from a variety of fresh organic fruits, greens and vegetables
    • this will help to detoxify your liver and is the most important step to healing cancer
    • fruits, greens and vegetables contain cancer killing phytonutrients so eat them raw, juice them, never over-cook them or microwave them
    • have a green smoothie a day or at least every other day
  • low to no added salt, you want to maximize potassium intake and salt prevents this
  • low to no added oil, except supplement daily with 1 tbs of Flax Seed Oil Chia Seeds (high in Omega 3)
    • a high Omega 6 to 3 ratio creates inflammation and cancer feeds off inflammation; supplementing with Chia Seeds turns down the inflammation
    • avoid all fried foods which, by their nature, have a high Omega 6 to 3 ratio
    • green leafy vegetables will give you the natural, healthy ratio of Omega 6 to 3 = 1:1
    • do not cook with Flax Seed Oil, Canola Oil, or other oils high in Omega 3 as these turn toxic when cooked
  • avoid vitamins, except B-12
    • For most vegans, your B-12 requirement will be greater then the RDA. Take methylcobalamin for B-12.
    • Folate complements B-12, get your RDA of folate from a whole food such as sun flower seeds.
    • Get all your vitamins and minerals can from nuts and seeds. For example, one Brazil Nut will give you more then your RDA of Selenium. Whole foods are safer than vitamins.
    • If you are a strict vegan, make sure you are getting a small amount of saturated fats via raw coconut butter/oil  for healthy hormone production.
  • avoid soy protein isolates, it may fuel fuels estrogen driven cancers
    1. Soy, in any form, has phytoestrogens.  If you have estrogen driven cancer, please avoid.
    2. “Choosing traditional and less processed forms of soy (such as tofu, miso, tempeh, edamame and even soy milk) over highly processed soy foods (such as soy cheeses, soy meats, and soy protein isolates) is likely to be a safer choice, as well.” [3]
    3. Avoid soy protein isolates in protein powders, power bars, fake food, etc
  • avoid artificial sweeteners, MSG, high fructose corn syrup and sugar
    • use natural low GI sweeteners like Agave Nectar or Stevia are best
    • plant-center vegan diets are naturally low GI
    • if you are diabetic, keep your blood sugar in-check to reduce inflammation but you will likely see your diabetes improve

2. Drink plenty of water to help detox your body; avoid caffeine and alcohol which will dehydrate you

  • men: 3.7L = 16 8oz cups = 1 gallon/day [1]
  • women 2.7L = 12 8oz cups/day [1]

3. Practice some form of stress reduction daily

  • affirmations, yoga, meditation, positive visualization, breathing exercises, whatever releases stress for you
  • this re-balances your stressed out endocrine system, important for reducing inflammation and allow your body’s natural healing mechanisms to kick-in

4. Aerobic exercise for 30min 6x a week

  • exercise does help kill cancer; how much do you need:

    Studies show that physical exercise helps the body fight cancer.  But the required dose isn’t the same for all cancers. … For breast cancer, there seems to be a measurable effect after three to five hours a week of walking at normal speed.  For cancer of the colon and rectum, twice as much is needed to have a comparable effect. … Finally, to have an effect on prostate cancer … the equivalent of three hours of jogging spread out over the week. [p.189]

5. Increase the metabolically active Vit-D in your body by taking frequent full body sunbathes for short amounts of time

  • You need to be your own best judge of how much and how long you want to expose yourself to the sun.  Obviously, you don’t want to over do it and give yourself a nasty sunburn.  Recommendation: 15-20 min at high noon every other day.
  • A diet high in animal protein will block the metabolically active Vit-D your body needs — transition first to a vegan diet to get the full benefits of sunbathing.

There is one pre-requite to starting this diet, make sure your digestion is working properly.  If you have candidiasis, irritable bowel syndrome, or similar digestion problem, this must be solved first through proper food combining, eating “live” fermented foods like rejuvelac, miso, sauerkraut, coconut keifer, etc. “The Body Ecology Diet” by Donna Gates and “The Living Foods Lifestyle” by Brenda Cobb are the best books to start with if you have poor digestion.

Oleuropein from olive leaf has reversed Herceptin resistance in HER2 breast cancer cells in vitro. There are also studies showing that it has an effect on non Her2 MCF-7 cells. hydroxtyrosol also in olive oil/leaf is also active against cancer.

Olive oil’s bitter principle reverses acquired autoresistance to trastuzumab (Herceptin) in HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells.

Oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol inhibit MCF-7 breast cancer cell proliferation interfering with ERK1/2 activation.

This mouse study is interesting as it was prior to the above mentioned studies

Oleuropein, a non-toxic olive iridoid, is an anti-tumor agent and cytoskeleton disruptor.

” When administered orally to mice that developed spontaneous tumors, Oleuropein completely regressed tumors in 9-12 days. When tumors were resected prior to complete regression, they lacked cohesiveness and had a crumbly consistency. No viable cells could be recovered from these tumors”
